“New Age” creatine – not just for athletes anymore

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Wow – I just read a new study on creatine and it just keeps looking better and better as a supplement. Creatine is one of those naturally occurring substances that works so well as a supplement, scientists used to think it might be bad for you over the long term, like pharmaceutical drug use. After all, as the old saying goes, “for every action there must be a reaction”. When it comes to drugs or prescription medications, the reaction eventually becomes negative as continual use will, at some point, take its toll on certain organs and tissues. For example, the chronic use of NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen or other painkillers will have eventual negative side-effects on the kidneys or stomach lining. Well, the short- and long-term reaction for creatine appears to be nothing short of sensational. In other words, there’s no negative reaction — the action caused by supplementing creatine beyond what the diet can supply seems to cause a reaction of continual benefits – even in old age!

Creatine supplements have now been in play for almost 20 years and have been used safely by millions people. This very fact has prompted thousands of clinical studies that have looked further into creatine’s benefits as a supplement.

We have always known that athletes get stronger using creatine supplements, but scientists have recently found that older men and women can benefit also. In fact, in the study I just read, a group of men approximately 70 years of age did strength training for 12 weeks. Those who used 5 grams of creatine daily gained double the muscle size and lifted 40-60% more weight than those using the placebo. That’s amazing! Creatine supplementation also works for women. While younger women may not like the muscle-building effect, older women look forward to it for many reasons: 1) As you age you lose muscle and tone so adding it back can dramatically enhance your appearance; 2) bones weaken with age and stronger muscles mean stronger bones; 3) the more & stronger muscle you can keep, the better your body will function into old age, allowing you to live a longer, more productive life without assistance.

For those of you wondering how supplemental creatine works beyond just supplying the additional energy substrate to lift more weights, which in itself can lead to more muscle, here are a few things recently discovered: high levels of creatine appear to turn on your muscle-building genes and stimulate satellite cells, which are the stem cells found in muscle just waiting to wake up. These cells help repair and build more muscle. Also, creatine can help keep muscle from breaking down from age, injury or weightlifting, meaning your body can now spend more time making new muscle rather than repairing old or damaged tissues.

Wow again. Creatine sounds like a wonder drug (minus the negative side effects) for any of us in the older generation looking to stay young and spry as long as possible. Unfortunately when I was a bodybuilder, creatine wasn’t around and, ironically, it was long after retirement from competition that I started using it for the exact reasons listed above. I have been using it daily since I turned 50 and I am now 58. Yes sir, creatine mixed in my morning shake keeps me structurally healthy so I can drink scotch at night – now that’s a winning combo.

So if you are looking for the perfect gift for older relatives, get them some dotFIT Creatine Monohydrate and have them mix it with the dotFIT Pre/Post Workout Formula shake – and get of the way!

Toxins in supplements? Not when you use dotFIT products.

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Recently there has been a lot of press about toxins being found in supplements, particularly in herbal supplements. So we wanted to take a few minutes to address why you DON’T have to worry about toxins when you use dotFIT products.

Our Science and Research Team that develops our product formulas includes experts from all areas of health and fitness – registered dietitians, researchers, physicians and sports medicine practitioners.

At our FDA Regulated, Drug Licensed manufacturing facility (Robinson Pharma, Inc.), all active and inactive ingredients are quarantined upon delivery and tested for purity and potency. If any impurities or lack of potency are found, the compounds are rejected and will not be used.

Testing continues throughout the manufacturing process to ensure that purity, potency and the exact ingredient variables are maintained for each and every product. All ingredients and finished products are tested for micro- and heavy metals, for pesticides and aflatoxins if the ingredient is prone.

With dotFIT dietary supplements, you have the same confidence you would if you were taking a pharmaceutical drug. We call it the dotFIT Pure Promise. If you have questions about our products or product formulas, you can call or email our support team at 877.436.8348 or support[at]dotfit.com.

Why exerspy?

Friday, September 18th, 2009

When you wear something that kind of looks like an MP3 player on your arm all the time, minus the headphones, you get asked the same question a lot.

“What is that?”

And invariably when I tell people what it is – a device that monitors your calories burned, steps, physical activity and sleep efficiency for the purpose of weight control – the response is always the same:

“But you don’t need to lose weight.”

You know what I want to say?  “EXACTLY! Wearing this little thing on my arm makes me aware of how many calories I burn so I know how many calories I can eat in a day without gaining weight.”

~

Like most people, I have a busy life. I commute 60 miles a day for work, I have responsibilities at home, and I don’t always have time to work out, or sometimes I just don’t want to. Using the exerspy doesn’t make up for exercising, but it gives me wiggle room. It keeps me informed and helps me make smart decisions about food – something that I didn’t learn from my parents or in school. The fact of the matter is that life – and weight control – is much harder without exerspy.

Before I had access to my calorie burn data, I struggled with my weight.  When I finished grad school, I got my first job and woke up 6 months later to find my pants too tight.  The weight gain seemed sudden and inexplicable. I went to the gym 4-5 days a week and did my best to eat healthy foods.  I didn’t know what else to do so I started skipping meals, thinking it would help me lose a few pounds, but all I got was frustrated and really, really hungry.

What had changed was my life.  I no longer walked to class two or three times a day or bounced up and down the stairs of my house to do this or that while writing papers.  Instead, I was stuck at a desk for hours and hours, only burning about 1600 calories a day and getting fat.  I had no idea what was really going on, and I started feeling like a victim of my own body.

A few years later I found bodybugg, which was created by the same team that now makes the exerspy. It changed everything.

The best thing about using a device like exerspy is how empowered you feel once you understand the relationship between calories in and calories out.  You realize you have complete control. It’s right there on the screen in front of you when you upload and log what you ate for the day – you burned X calories, and you ate X calories. The difference between the two is ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW to control your weight. Before exerspy, I didn’t know the difference between those two numbers or what it meant.

With access to this kind of info about your body, metabolism is no longer a factor, nor are carbs or late night eating or genetics or any other weight myth you’ve ever heard.  Diets don’t work because they require you to make drastic changes that you can’t maintain throughout the ups and downs of life.  With exerspy and dotFIT Me, your lifestyle is your fitness plan.  You eat what you want, you move when you want, and you make adjustments.  I don’t know about you but that’s a plan I can live with.

Not all supplements are created equally… (or legally)

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Just in case you missed it, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers to avoid supplements that contain steroids and similar substances like. So if you’re taking products that claim to alter, decrease or enhance the hormones testosterone, estrogen or progestin, you probably want to stop. Serious complications, including liver damage and stroke have been reported. We’re happy to say that dotFIT doesn’t produce any of these types of products because we thoroughly review the research and carefully examine the potential benefits AND downsides. Plus, we voluntarily use an FDA and NSF approved facility along with a 3rd party to certify our products – something few companies do.

We take that extra step to make sure our products are safe AND effective. And not only that, but we take into account your health history with a screening process that also incorporates your age, experience, and goals. Check it out yourself and get a supplement recommendation AND products you can trust. http://www.dotfit.com/shop/category.aspx?cid=1380

What’s the problem with using dietary supplements?

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

What’s the Problem?

Navigating the sea of confusion

Fear not….

What’s wrong with supplements?

What’s the problem with using dietary supplements? When the dust settles on the practice of supplementing one’s diet for health or performance reasons, there are typically three areas that remain a sore spot with overall health industry acceptance. These are:

1. Lack of industry testing/quality control- no guarantee of label claim being in the product

2. Fear of excessive nutrient intake

3. Bogus claims/ridiculous marketing

While we at dotFIT cannot police the entire industry, we can control our little part of the supplement world. Also, while most companies mention in the fine print that you need to include proper diet and exercise, we make sure that all of these elements are available at the same place and at the same time. Now, addressing the three issues above, here is what we do as a company to overcome those obstacles.

1. Our unique formulas are produced by Robinson Pharma, an FDA-registered,  Drug-Licensed facility that operates in compliance with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). Additionally, our products undergo 3rd party testing through Schuster labs. This gives us a peace of mind as a manufacturer that our products are made in a facility that tests from raw material to finished product and at many steps along the way. The finished products are then validated for purity and potency by a third party lab. This piece of mind trickles down to the consumer who can, with complete confidence, know that what is listed on the label is indeed in the product. Additionally, all of our meal replacement powders are manufactured with uncompromising standards in compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) in an FDA- and NSF-registered facility, ensuring an environment free of possible cross-contamination (a big issue in sports).

2. Recent polls have shown that up to 65% of Americans take at least one dietary supplement a day, with a high percentage taking more than one. Combining multiple products from multiple manufacturers can be a recipe for disaster. Manufacturers do not get together and BBQ on the weekend, discussing how their formulas can integrate with each other’s products. Sadly, it is common practice for manufacturers to include a considerable amount of additional ingredients, window dressing if you will, to make their formula stand out amongst a sea of competition. Multiple products taking this “add-on” approach can easily lead to excessive and potentially problematic nutrient intakes. Following our “program” approach, dotFIT is a system, one where the daily use of a properly formulated multiple vitamin-and-mineral formula forms the foundation of anyone’s plan. All other dotFIT products and formulas are coordinated with the multivitamin formula and only deliver the specific nutrients or compounds needed or desired in the additional product. No add-ons or window dressing is necessary. Taking this approach ensures that the user NEVER exceeds the upper limit of nutrient intake. Our recommendations take into account the person’s age, sex, diet, goal, activity level, experience and medical history when determining what, if any, supplement recommendations are made.

3. As for bogus claims and ridiculous marketing . . . have you seen our stuff? We go a long way to educate and provide support materials to those who sell and take our products because we do not advertise or make outlandish claims. All product information on the label conforms to FDA and FTC standards and laws regarding supplement labeling. Our support materials, such as our thorough Supplement Reference Guide (like a dietary supplement Physicians’ Desk Reference), include the scientific research and facts about what it is, what it does and how it applies to our target audience. We believe that education, awareness and proper screening are what makes a product a viable option for a consumer, not giveaways and sexy models.

There you have it. In a sea of chaos and misinformation we can only police our little part of the pond. But in our world, we do it safely.

We do it properly.

And we do it right.

Problem solved.

dotFIT Weight Loss Program Overview

dotFIT Weight Loss – Fat Releaser

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Excess body fat and diets high in calories and fat can compromise liver function. This potentially leads to multiple obesity related conditions, such as insulin resistance, fatigue and reduced liver enzymes’ impact on fat burning. If your ability to burn fat decreases it can lead to lower energy levels and a vicious cycle of increased hunger and overeating. FatReleaser™ is scientifically developed to stop that cycle in its tracks! Delivering a natural blend of ingredients to speed up the removal of fat from the liver, support and maintain healthy liver function and combat the oxidative stress brought on by accumulating fat in the liver. In a groundbreaking study the key ingredient in FatReleaser decreased the body’s absorption of dietary fat by inhibiting gastrointestinal Lipase (the enzyme that prepares dietary fat for absorption). This led to a reduction in the absorption of overall calories and subjects lost up to 300% more weight than those taking a placebo, in only 12 weeks.

dotFIT Weight Loss Program – Carb Killer

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

We all enjoy eating carbohydrates and we know they are also one of the bodys primary sources of fuel. Unfortunately for our waistlines, starchy foods such as breads, potatoes, pasta and rice quickly convert to glucose, which is a sugar that the body uses for everyday energy. If the excess glucose isnt used for energy through exercise or physical activity youll quickly start to pile on unwanted pounds and stubborn fat stores. Now you can take control with CarbKiller™. Each serving contains clinically tested Phase 2®, a proprietary standardized white kidney bean extract that works by blocking dietary starch from being absorbed. By working with the bodys natural enzymes, Phase 2 blocks the action of the alpha amylase enzyme, which is responsible for breaking down starches into sugars.

dotFIT Weight Loss – Thermo Shock

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

ThermoShock™ delivers a powerful assault on unwanted fat stores with a combination of maximum strength thermogenic agents and a patented, clinically proven complex of plant based polysaccharides and esterified fatty acids. This natural compound works through unique body fat regulation pathways, proving in a groundbreaking study to regulate body fat storage and activate 92% more weight loss. Even more impressive is that subjects using these ingredients also increased their lean muscle to fat ratio, preserving hard earned muscle and creating awe inspiring definition.
